Open Telegram and tap New Message (the pencil icon)
Then select New Group
Choose some contacts to add (optional) and tap Next
Set a group name (and optional photo)
Tap Create.
On Desktop:
Click the menu (≡) and select New Group
Enter a group name
Add contacts (optional)
Click Create.
By default, every new group is private (only people you invite can join). Next, we’ll see how to keep it private or make it public.
Public vs Private Telegram Groups
Telegram groups can be Private or Public. A private group is invite-only and will not appear in search results, whereas a public group can be found by anyone (and joined via a link or search).
Private Groups: Only invited members can join. They have invite links, but only admins can access that link.
Public Groups: Public groups have a username that serves as a permanent invite link, and they can grow large (up to 200,000 members).
Switching group type
You can toggle a group between private and public in the group settings:
Open the group info (tap the name → Edit → Group Type)
Choose Public Group to set a public link
Choose Private Group to make it invite-only (this generates a private invite link).
(All groups start as private by default – so if you’re wondering how to create a private group on Telegram, just create a group and don’t set a public link.)
Adding Members and Sharing Invite Links
Once your group is ready, you can invite people in two ways:
Add members directly: If someone is in your phone’s contacts, you can add them to the group immediately:
On mobile, open the group info page and tap Add Members.
On desktop, click the group’s name and choose Add Member.
Select the contacts to add.
(Note: You can only directly add up to 200 contacts; beyond that, use an invite link)
Share the invite link: Every Telegram group has an invite link. To share your Telegram group link:
Open the group info page and find Invite Link
Copy that link (it looks like https://t.me/...) and send it to anyone you want to invite
When they tap the link, Telegram will prompt them to join. If it’s a private group, only admins can see and share its invite link. In a public group, the group link is public and anyone with it can join.
You can revoke an invite link anytime in the group settings (if you want to disable an old link and create a new one).
Managing Admins and Permissions
As the group creator (owner), you have full control. You can manage admins and member permissions easily:
Admins (up to 50) can:
Add or remove members
Delete messages
Ban users
Change group settings
Member permissions you can set:
Allow or block messages
Allow or block media and links
Enable Slow Mode (limits how often members can send messages)
These settings help your group stay organized and spam-free.
Telegram Groups Features
Telegram offers several features to organize conversations and engage members in your group:
Topics: Organize discussions into separate threads within a group, allowing for focused conversations on specific subjects.
Pinned Messages: Highlight important messages at the top of the chat for easy visibility. Multiple messages can be pinned simultaneously.
Polls: Create polls to gather opinions or make decisions within the group. Options include anonymous voting, multiple answers, and quiz modes.
Group Video Calls: Host live video sessions with group members. Features include screen sharing, noise suppression, and support for a large number of participants.
Content Protection: Restrict members from forwarding messages, taking screenshots, or saving media to keep your group's content private.
Stories: Admins can post ephemeral content visible to all group members, fostering engagement through short-lived updates.
Discussion Groups: Link a group directly to your Telegram channel, allowing subscribers to discuss posts, ask questions, and build a community around your content.
Boosts: Premium users can boost groups to unlock additional features like custom emoji packs and enhanced group customization options.
Bots: Automate interactions, welcome new members, moderate content, and enhance group functionality.
How to Join a Telegram Group
Joining a Telegram group is easy and quick. Here's how to join public, private, and paid groups:
Public Groups
Public groups can be joined by anyone directly from Telegram:
Open Telegram and tap the search icon (magnifying glass)
Type the group’s name or topic
Select the correct group from the search results
Tap Join
(If you have the group's public link, anyone can join directly by tapping or clicking on it.)
Private Groups
Private groups need an invite link from an admin or current member:
Obtain the invite link (e.g., https://t.me/joinchat/...) from an existing member or admin
Tap the link. Telegram opens automatically
Tap Join to enter the group
(If the group uses join requests, your request will be reviewed by admins before you're accepted.)
Paid Groups
Some Telegram groups require a paid subscription to join. These are often managed through InviteMember, a powerful yet simple codeless tool for subscription-based businesses.
Browse available plans and choose one that includes the group
Complete the payment process
Receive a link to join the group
After subscribing, you can manage your subscription—such as updating billing information or canceling—through the same membership bot or subscription page.
Now you're fully prepared to create, manage, and join Telegram groups!
With these powerful features, Telegram groups make connecting and communicating easy and efficient for everyone.
